Mazda discontinues MPV minivan

05/09/2006

Mazda MPV
Mazda has come out with some pretty hot cars these past few years, from the RX-8 to the MX-5, but they built a strong reputation with the MPV minivan which came out what seems like eons ago. Well, it seems that the dinosaur is finally becoming extinct, as the company is ending production of the MPV minivan. The reasoning they give is that they are running out of production capacity, and they'd rather use their resources to pump out the new CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers rather than the MPV minivan.

This choice only makes sense, since they would be competing with themselves, in a sense, if they continued with the MPV, given that they now have the Mazda 5 mini-minivan on the small side and the upcoming CX-9 on the bigger end of things. The MPV is virtually obsolete, though CEO James J. O'Sullivan says that "it's still a great vehicle, still relevant to the market."

The trend in the automotive world seems to be heading toward the demise of minivans altogether, with crossover SUVs picking up the slack for something larger than a conventional sedan. That said, the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Dodge Caravan are still doing quite well for themselves, so the death of the minivan isn't quite here just yet.
